10.Sep.03 - Clue to why men suffer
more from autism
Research findings from the Institute of
Child Health in London have offered "the best explanation for why men are
ten times more vulnerable to autism than women". According to scientists
from the Institute, headed by David Skuse, a cluster of genes found on the X chromosome
are heavily implicated in autism. While women have two copies of this chromosome,
men have only one, and scientists think this could be vital to the disorder's
gender profile. When these crucial genes go wrong, the brain struggles to cope
with normal social interactions. Once the identity of the genes has been traced
more accurately, the discovery could have important implications for diagnosing
and treating the condition. Source: The Times

- New technique to treat autism
A brief case study in The
Sun describes a new learning system designed to help autistic children. The Son-Rise
system uses interactive play and other methods to help children communicate more
effectively. A spokesman for the National Autistic Society said, 'Some families
have found this programme has a real impact on their children's autism but others
have found it to be little or no help. It can also be expensive'. The article
describes how five-year-old George Stooks, who used to be petrified of strangers
and unable to make eye contact, speak, or feed himself, improved enormously under
the Son-Rise system. Some local education authorities may give financial support
to parents who wish to try the system. Source: The Sun

- Brain growth problem is autism cause, scientists say
Scientists
in the US have discovered that children who develop autism tend to be born with
small heads, and their brains then grow extremely rapidly before their first birthdays.
The unusual rate of growth appears to damage the infants' brains, interfering
with the development of healthy connections between neurons, and triggering autism.
This development takes place before the symptoms of autism are usually detected,
and could lead to earlier diagnosis and therapy. The study also offers strong
evidence that the MMR vaccine plays no part in the development of autism, as its
first clinical signs are present long before the vaccine is administered. The
research is published in the Journal of the American Medical Association. Source:

- Autism is much more prevalent than previously believed
Current
estimates of the prevalence of autism are 16 per 10 000 births, but this estimated
prevalence increases to 63 per 10 000 when all forms of autism spectrum disorders
are included. It is much higher than previously reported, Peter Szatmari, professor
at the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioural Neurosciences, McMaster University,
Hamilton, ON, Canada, writes in an editorial of today´s British Medical
Journal. More>>

Fish Oils
Jan 31, 2003 - ITV's This Morning
"The situation is that about one third
of children with autism will respond to fish oil therapy. But rich in EPA - that's
very important... and that's the same for hyperactivity, dyslexia, dyspraxia."
The
wonderful story of Hope Lewis, who found great benefit on refined omega 3 fish oils, was featured
on ITV's This Morning. Dr Chris Steele also explained how supplementation can assist
many conditions, including night blindness, post-partum depression and hyperactivity.

- Fish Oil can help many developmental conditions
There is
increasing evidence that highly unsaturated fatty acids play a role in many developmental
conditions, including dyslexia, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and the
autistic spectrum. They are also important in psychiatric conditions like depression,
bipolar disorder (manic depression) and schizophrenia. This is not surprising
given that these special fats normally make up 20% of the dry weight of the brain.

Mercury & its Links to Autism
15.Sep.03 - Low
mercury levels in baby hair linked to autism
Dr Miriam Stoppard
reports on the latest research on the links between mercury and autism. Scientists
studied the levels of mercury in the baby hair of children later diagnosed with
autism. The autistic babies had far lower levels of mercury in their hair than
other infants. The researchers have speculated that autistic children either don't
absorb mercury, or have more trouble excreting it. While the findings suggest
that some children have a genetic fault that makes them far more susceptible to
mercury poisoning, the results of the study do not prove this. The differences
in the mercury levels in baby hair may be a sign of a more general difficulty
in dealing with metals. Source: Daily Mirror
19.Jun.03
- Autism is linked to mercury poisoning
Scientists
in the United States have discovered a link between mercury and autism. A group
of doctors from Louisiana found that babies who go on to develop autism have abnormally
low levels of mercury in their hair, suggesting that their bodies may have difficulty
in excreting this poison. This could be causing a dangerous build-up of mercury
in brain cells that could trigger autism. There is potential evidence that a mercury-based
preservative called thimerosal, which is used in some vaccines, could be responsible
for some cases of autism. Thimerosal has never been used in the MMR vaccine,
which contains no mercury. The results are to be published in the International
Journal of Toxicology. Source: The Times

International Journal of Toxicology publishes fully refereed papers covering
